Andrew Wyrich Newsletter Editor Examples

Andrew is currently at Yahoo News, where he works on The Yodel newsletter, homepage curation, and strategy. Andrew also served as the newsletter editor at the Daily Dot for three-and-a-half years. He completely re-designed and re-launched the newsletter under new branding and a more refined-vision to deliver value to subscribers.

During his time as the Daily Dot’s newsletter editor, he boosted the open rate from single digits to 40%+ for engaged users, which made up around 70% of the entire list. He also boosted CTRs dramatically.

He also designed and launched major editorial projects like the annual “Daily Dot Hall of Fame,” where engaged readers were rewarded by being able to vote on who they should think should be inducted. He also spearheaded end-of-the-year content where each newsletter would ask the most engaged readers to fill out surveys. The number of survey answers tripled year-over-year.

Andrew also designed and published a welcome series, win-back flow, and re-engagement campaign. He previously was the deputy tech editor at the site. One testimonial called it “the morning newspaper of the internet.”

As newsletter editor, Andrew oversaw a team of 7+ writers who wrote daily columns on various aspects of internet culture including viral politics, conspiracy theories, trending videos, viral recipes, and more.

In 2023, the web_crawlr newsletter was recognized as an honoree for the Email Newsletters (Entertainment & Culture) category for the 27th Annual Webby Awards.

Besides the Daily Dot, Andrew also launched Almost A Met, a weekly newsletter that does deep-dives into players and coaches that almost became New York Mets. The newsletter has 50%+ open rates and has grown rapidly.

Below are some samples of the web_crawlr newsletter. A full list of newsletters Andrew curated at the Daily Dot can be found here.

Daily newsletters:

Below is a sample of what the Daily Dot newsletter and the Yodel newsletter looked like on a daily basis. The Daily Dot’s newsletter highlighted the most important internet culture news of the day (curated by Andrew) followed by an exclusive column written by a staff member of the team and edited by Andrew before publication.

Andrew wrote editions of the Yodel newsletter on a regular basis.

Special Edition Newsletters:

Andrew spearheaded the launch of exclusive columns that were sent to only the most engaged readers of the newsletter. If they met a certain threshold, they were automatically sent “Scrolling In The Deep,” where a columnist would define and contextualize Gen Z internet slang terms. The exclusive newsletter had open rates above 40% and generated positive feedback on a weekly basis.

You can see examples of “Scrolling In The Deep” here and here.

Occasionally, Andrew would also design ways to highlight large editorial projects by other members of the team. This example was an AI story package by the Daily Dot’s Hi-Res investigative team, led by Claire Goforth.

Daily Dot Hall of Fame newsletters:

Each year, Andrew would lead the “Daily Dot Hall of Fame,” where only the most engaged readers of the newsletter would be able to vote on who would be inducted. The project lasted 6 weeks each year, with a new category to vote on each week.

Andrew oversaw three years of the “Daily Dot Hall of Fame,” and voting participation tripled year-over-year.

Breaking news newsletters:

Andrew also experimented with breaking news emails, where he would choose a story recently published on the site, collaborate with editors, and send an email blast out to the most dedicated readers of the newsletter. Below is one example.
